I was glad to see you subscribing to my account, but even more glad to see that your wheelhouse is sordid trash! I don’t write nearly enough about this dank corner of cinema, because i’m always afraid I’ll scare away my highbrow readers. But man alive, there’s gold in them thar hills. With a little encouragement, maybe I could be goaded into those waters once in a while. With some of these artistes— Bava, Argento, Fulci, Corman, etc.— I’m willing to make an unapologetically extravagant case for their artistry.

And Saulnier is intriguing to me because his colleague Macon Blair (Blue Ruin) made an excellent indie film and used a couple of my songs. I’ve seen I think two Saulnier films, both great.

Oh yes, in fact I'm hoping they'll put 'Sordid Trash Maven' under 'profession' on my passport one day.

I'd love to read some of your thoughts on Fulci. He's such a strange, driven film maker that he tends to bring the best out of people who write about him. I'll be tackling New York Ripper one of these days, once I've steeled myself for it. A film I find utterly repugnant but am totally fascinated by.

Would that be 'I Don't Feel At Home In This World Any More'? That's a film that's long overdue a rewatch. I shall cock an ear out for your tunes as I do so.

Yes that’s the film. Two of mine are in there somewhere; one is at the end.

And yes, Fulci. A tough nut— for years i avoided him and i read an interesting review in a book on giallo and then gave him a chance and was mightily impressed. I do think some of his stuff is trash but I’ve seen one that contained a bunch of gratuitous violence and torture and I still thought it was great. I’m supposed to be working so must ring off now without completely answering. But the film was Don’t Torture a Duckling.

THANK YOU. I thought I'd had a stroke when Rebel Ridge came out and nobody mentioned this. I seem to remember people saying that the story "got away" from Saulnier, but I don't remember feeling that way when I watched it. And that cast is superb.

It's legit become one of my favourite films. It seems to be one that benefits from rewatches as well. I can understand people being a bit "huh?" On first exposure because the ending is so unconcerned with normal crime story beats, but when you meet it on its level it really opens up. And that shoot out is fucking astonishing.
